Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is a private, not-for-profit organization whose purpose is to provide assistance and support through established programs in local communities throughout the world. A sisterhood of more than 200,000 predominately Black college educated women, the Sorority currently has over 1,000 chapters located in the United States, England, Japan (Tokyo and Okinawa), Germany, the U. S. Virgin Islands, Bermuda, the Bahamas, Jamaica and the Republic of Korea. The major programs of the sorority are based upon the organization's Five Point Programmatic Thrust:
The Sorority was founded in 1913 by 22 students at Howard University. These young women wanted to use their collective strength to promote academic excellence; to provide scholarships; to provide support to the undeserved; educate and stimulate participation in the establishment of positive public policy; and to highlight issues and provide solutions for problems in their communities.
Thomson Alumnae Chapter
Thomson Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was chartered on March 12, 1994 as the 864th chapter of our glorious sisterhood. Soror Lois Gilder, who was at the time Director , Southern Region, and Soror Louise A. Rice, National Secretary , at the time conducted the chartering ceremony. There were 24 chartering members.
Delta’s presence is felt in the community. We are the only one of the “Divine Nine” organizations of the National Pan-Hellenic Council with a chapter in the community. Our annual calendar is planned to include each area of Delta’s Five Point Programmatic Thrust.
Some chapter activities include:
Proceeds from fundraising efforts support community scholarships, co-sponsoring book signings, and supporting mentoring programs and other community activities.
